Washington, D.C. ─ Just a few days before the 2007 season opened for the Georgetown University football team, two of the team’s seniors knew it was time to go to work. Most of the work they would be doing that day, and over the next three months, would center on the Hoyas’ next opponent. Last week it was Stony Brook; this week, it’s Lafayette.
But for seniors Mike Greene (Rockville, Md./St. John’s College) and Kyle VanFleet (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock), their work on the football field wasn’t the only thing on their minds.
Prior to the team’s opening game against Stony Brook, Greene, a linebacker, and VanFleet, a fullback, both received full-time job offers for positions starting after their May 2008 graduation.
Greene received offers from two different groups at The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), one from the “Loan & High-Yield Markets” group in New York City and the other from the “Credit Markets” group at RBS Greenwich Capital in Connecticut. VanFleet, meanwhile, received an offer from Goldman Sachs Investment Banking Derivatives Group.
“It’s definitely nice to be able to sign a contract before starting my senior year,” Greene said prior to classes starting last week. “For the past year or so, I’ve wanted this pretty badly and to realize this goal, to see it on paper, it’s just a great feeling.”
VanFleet, who had a 10-week internship with Goldman Sachs this past summer, echoed the sentiments. “After spending a lot of my free time in my junior year interviewing and stressing over receiving an internship, a post-graduate offer definitely takes a lot of the pressure off,” VanFleet said.š “This will allow me to concentrate on classes and football during my senior year.”
The success of Greene and VanFleet is part of what Hoya Head Coach Kevin Kelly draws upon during the recruiting process. “I tell every kid we recruit that they have a world of opportunities when they come to Georgetown,” Kelly explained. “It’s the chance to get a BCS (Bowl Championship Series) education while playing at a high level of football. We’re thrilled for Mike and Kyle and it’s a testament to the hard work our student-athletes put in.”
Both Greene and VanFleet had contact with former Georgetown University student-athletes as they pursued their internship opportunities.
Greene, who interned with the “Loan & High Yield Markets” over the summer, was recruited by and worked with Dennis Dee (C’86, L’89), a former Hoya who was also a student-athlete as a member of the track and field on the Hilltop. VanFleet, meanwhile, worked with another former GU alum, Mike Romaszka (B’89) [a former Hoya football player], and was helped through the interview process by Brendan Boler (C’94), who played both football and lacrosse.
The hard work and commitment the duo has put into their school work and football under the direction of Kevin Kelly is an example of the opportunities students have at Georgetown.
While both players still have time to mull over their prospective employers, the opportunity to have offers is something they know was made easier because of where they go to school.
“They’re both great opportunities and I could see myself doing either one,” Greene said. “If you asked me three years ago why I chose to play football at Georgetown, it was because of the people here.š And if I end up working at RBS, I’ll say the same thing.”
