Washington, D.C. ─ The Georgetown University plays its second-straight home game, and the first of three against Ivy League opponents this season, when the team hosts defending Ivy League Champion Yale at the Multi-Sport Field on Saturday, September 15. The Hoyas and the Bulldogs will kick off at 1 p.m. on the Hilltop.
The game will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on Verizon FiOS1, with B.J. Koubaroulis calling the play-by-play and former Hoya standout Brandon Small serving as the color analyst. The game will air on Monday, September 17 at noon and can be seen against on Tuesday, September 18 at midnight.
Georgetown enters the weekend looking for its first win of the season, after dropping decisions at Stony Brook (35-28) in the season opener and then at home last week to Patriot League rival Lafayette (28-7).
This weekend’s game with Yale will be the first ever between the schools, two of the oldest programs in the country. Yale first started playing football in 1871, while Georgetown fielded a team for the first time in 1887.
The first of three games against schools from the Ivy League this season, this weekend’s contest marks only the second time that an Ivy League school has visited Georgetown for a football game.š Georgetown’s home opener in 2005 against Brown was the program’s first-ever game against the Bears, but also marked the first time an Ivy League school visited the Hilltop.
The Hoyas have an all-time record of 2-14-1 against Ivy League foes, including last season’s 23-21 loss at Columbia.š The Hoyas won at Cornell, 42-20 on October 18, 2003, marking the first meeting with an Ivy school since a matchup with Penn in 1937. Other Ivy League opponents on the schedule this year include a game at home against Cornell on Sept. 29 and a matchup at Penn on October 6.
The Georgetown offense will look to get back on track this weekend after being held to seven points in the loss at Lafayette. Senior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./Port Edwards) has completed 37-of-53 passes for 357 yards. Sophomore slot Charlie Houghton (Toronto, Ontario/St. Michael’s), last year’s Patriot League Rookie of the Year, has caught 12 passes for 115 yards, while senior fullback Kyle Van Fleet (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) has 11 catches for 111 yards.
Van Fleet leads the rushing corps with 29 carries for 86 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Robert Lane (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) has nine carries for 49 yards.
On the defensive side, senior defensive back Kevin Cherepski (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) leads the team with 17 tackles, while junior Chris Parker (Stone Mountain, Ga./Tucker) is second on the team with 14 stops and sophomore defensive back Travis Mack (West Chester, Pa./The Hill School) is third with 13 tackles.
The Bulldogs have been ranked as high as No. 18 and as low as 25th in seven different FCS (formerly I-AA) preseason polls. This is the first time a Yale football team has been included in the national (I-AA) pre-season rankings. The Elis are currently ranked 21st in this week’s Sports Network Poll and sit 24th in the FCS Coaches Poll.
