It was a Thursday night special for the home crowd at Chuck Coles Stadium in Dumfries, Va. Home cooking was the order of the day as the undefeated Potomac Panthers outclassed an overmatched North Stafford Wolverine team 42-13.
North Stafford head coach Tap Page said it best: "They were the better football team flat out, they have the speed, power and athleticism. They were just in a higher class than us."
It didn't take long for the Panthers to exert their will on the Wolverines. Potomac running back Darius Brent scored on a 23 yard pass play to get the Panthers rolling. Potomac's other star running back Mulku Kalokah, who was nicked up entering last night’s game, scored on a 10 yard reception to make the game 14-0. The first quarter was capped off with an Abdul Kenneh 61 yard touchdown reception and in a blink of any eye the score was 21-0.
The story of the game was Potomac's ability to mix the run and pass so well coupled with their athletes’ talent to execute to perfection. The North Stafford defense was constantly on their heels as the speed of Brent, Kalokah and Kenneh were overwhelming. Abdul Kenneh is a very impressive athlete, making plays on offense, defense and special teams. The Potomac Panthers overall speed was clearly evident.
In the second half, the Wolverines mounted an 80 yard touchdown drive led by their quarterback Nick Tierney. Tierney took over for North Stafford making plays with his feet as he scored on a 10 yard keeper to put his team on the board.
The Wolverines stopped the Panthers and were developing a little momentum when they were penalized for running into the kicker. That mistake would prove fatal as they had to give the ball back to the Potomac playmakers. Darius Brent scorched the earth on a 29 yard TD run with 4:42 left in the third quarter to make the score 35-7 Potomac.Brent finished the game with 116 yards rushing on 15 carries.
The Panthers' skill players, team speed and power made them seem as if they wererunning downhill. Panther runners Abass Conteh and John Hunt closed the deal in the fourth quarter. John Hunt scored the final touchdown for the Potomac.
North Stafford running back Josh Fowler scored a last minute touchdown for the Wolverines but it was too little, too late.
Potomac head coach Tony Lilly said after the game, "We came in a little banged up but our running game was strong tonight. We're building confidence as we continue into our season and get ready for Osbourn." The Potomac Panthers improved to 4-0, and looking could well be on the path to the playoffs and beyond.
