Fairfax, VA- George Mason Patriots forward Darryl Monroe is set to have exploratory surgery on his right big toe on Tuesday Oct 9. Monroe injured the toe while still in junior college and played through the injury last season.
“[He] could be out anywhere from 3-6 weeks,” said Patriots Coach Jim Larranaga on Monday. “We really won’t know that until the doctors have performed the surgery and can tell us to what extent the damage [is] in that toe.”
Monroe missed much of the pre-season last year due to the injury but the team decided rest and treatments would be the best way to treat it.
“In many regards [with] injuries in general you tend to take a more conservative approach initially,” said Larranaga. “The rest that he had cured it for a while but when he came back and started playing it materialized again and that has been the seesaw for us.”
After a slow start Monroe came on the middle of last season. In the team’s last 11 games, including the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, Monroe recorded two double doubles. Monroe scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 66-56 home loss to Old Dominion University on Feb 3. His second double double came in the CAA tournament win over Hofstra Mar 3. Monroe scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds in the 64-61 victory.
