Washington, D.C.-- Georgetown University senior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./Port Edwards) was named the Patriot League’s Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
It is the second time in his career that Bassuener has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week and the award marks the second time this season a Hoya player has earned one of the league’s weekly award winners, joining freshman linebacker Nick Parrish (Austin, Texas/Jesuit College Prep), who was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on October 1.
Bassuener and the Hoyas lost to Fordham on Saturday, 38-31, but the senior signal caller nearly led the Blue and Gray to a win after trailing by 21-point at halftime with three second half scores. He finished the day completing 33-of-48 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score.
Trailing 31-10 at the break, Bassuener threw for 269 yards and two scores while completing 20-of-26 passes.š He capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive early in the third quarter with a 16-yard scoring run that pulled the Hoyas to within 38-17. On Georgetown’s next drive, Bassuener completed seven-straight passes for 86 yards – including a 33-yard scoring strike to sophomore Robert Lane (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) – as the Hoyas cut Fordham’s l lead to 38-24.
In the team’s final scoring drive, Bassuener completed five straight passes for 63 yards and pulled GU to within 38-31 on a 26-yard pass to senior Brent Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School).
During Georgetown’s final three drives, Bassuener completed 16-straight passes for 180 yards.
Bassuener’s 33 completions were the most in a single game in Georgetown history, breaking the record of 31 completions set by David Paulus against Bucknell on October 26, 2002. His 48 pass attempts are tied for the fourth-most in a single game.
In throwing for 368 yards, it was the most passing yardage for a Hoya quarterback since Paulus threw for 350 yards against Bucknell during that 2002 game. Junior receiver Sidney Baker (Atlanta, Ga./Booker T. Washington) was the recipient of 10 catches for 111 yards, the most for a Hoya since Glenn Castergine had 125 receiving yards against VMI during the 2004 season.
Georgetown hits the road for the next three games, beginning next Saturday, October 20 at Bucknell. Kickoff at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
