Hyde scored from 10 yards out with four seconds remaining in regulation to lift Howard University to a 2-1 win over Adelphi University in an Atlantic Soccer Conference men’s game at Greene Stadium
It was the first conference win of the season for the Bison (3-3-5, 1-0-1 in the ASC), who were short one player through most of the game.
“It was a very emotional game because it was a conference game,” said first year coach Joseph Okoh. “A lot of it has to do with the lack of respect for us. Teams are judging us on our past. But this is a different Howard team. We battle and fight to the end as you saw today.”
The Bison got on the board first when Joel Senior scored in the 27th minute. Hyde and Guilherme Fonseca were credited with the assist.
Adelphi (2-10-2, 1-2-0 in ASC) knotted the score when Howard’s Robert Wesley was given a red card. The Panthers’ Patrick Figueiredo scored on the penalty kick at the 60:42 mark.
The game was very physical and play was stopped several times due to player injuries on the field. With the advantage of having an extra player, Adelphi managed to outshoot the Bison, 6-4 in the second half, but team hustle and aggressive play helped Howard abort scoring opportunities.
“We are very satisfied with the win,” said Senior, a sophomore and 2007 ASC Rookie of the Year. “It is a credit to our hard work and team execution that we were able to overcome the odds and pull out this win.”
Added Coach Okoh, “I am sure that the players are excited about the win and they will have a short celebration before we get back to work. We have set some goals and we are focused on achieving them.”
The Bison host the University of Maryland at Baltimore County in a non-conference match on Tuesday at 7 pm in Greene Stadium.
