Sophomore Forward Jeff Green Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll for Second-Straight Week

Washington, D.C.  --  The Georgetown University men’s basketball team moved up to No. 15 in the country in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll, released on Monday afternoon.  The Hoyas are also ranked 16th in the country in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ poll.

Georgetown, 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the BIG EAST, won its sixth-straight game, posting a thrilling 61-58 win over ninth-ranked Pittsburgh on Sunday at the MCI Center.  It was the second time this season that the Hoyas had posted a win over a top-10 team, including an 87-84 win over then-No. 1 Duke on January 21.  The last time GU beat two top-10 teams during the same season was in 1995-96, when they beat No. 6 Villanova in the regular season finale, and No. 9 Villanova a week later in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Georgetown posted a pair of wins last week, improving to 7-3 on the road with a 64-44 win at DePaul.  On Sunday, in front of more than 13,000 fans at the MCI Center, the Hoyas fought back from a 15-point deficit en route to three-point win.

The Hoyas are one of five BIG EAST schools among the top-25 in both polls, joined by Connecticut, Villanova, West Virginia and Pittsburgh.

Leading the way for the Hoyas last week was sophomore forward Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern), who was named to the BIG EAST’s Weekly Honor Roll for the second-straight week.  In the win at DePaul, Green scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  He followed that up with a 22-point point performance in the win over Panthers.  For the week, he averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, while connecting on 60.9 percent of his field goals (14-of-23).

In the last five games, Green is averaging 17.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (33-of-66).  Overall this season, the team’s co-captain is second on the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game, leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game and is second on the team with 3.25 assists per game.

It is the third-straight week a Hoya player has been named to the weekly honor roll, as senior forward Brandon Bowman (Santa Monica, Calif./Westchester) was named on January 23 following the Duke win.  Bowman currently leads the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game, is third on the team in rebounding (5.5 boards per game), while contributing 1.8 assists and a team-best 1.2 steals.

Georgetown returns to play again on Thursday night, hosting St. John’s (10-10, 3-6) at the MCI Center.  Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m. on ESPN2, with Dave O’Brien and Rick Majerus calling the action.  The game can also be heard on SportsTalk 980 AM, with Rich Chvotkin serving as the “Voice of the Hoyas.”
