Washington, D.C. – The Washington Mystics will have the sixth overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft as determined by the draft lottery held today. It will be the second consecutive year that the team will have the sixth pick. The Los Angeles Sparks landed the number one overall selection. The WNBA’s new franchise based in Atlanta was assigned the fourth spot. The 2008 WNBA Draft will be held in April. We are disappointed that we did not move up in the draft,” said General Manager Linda Hargrove. “But given the depth of the draft, we should get a player that can really help our team” In 2006, the Mystics selected forward Tamara James from the University of Miami with the eighth overall pick. During the 2007 WNBA draft, the Mystics selected Baylor University standout, forward Bernice Mosby with the sixth overall pick. The WNBA Lottery included the five teams that did not qualify for the 2007 WNBA Playoffs. The lottery is modeled after the lottery used in the NBA and is weighted to favor the teams with the poorer records. The lottery establishes the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on teams’ regular-season finishes in 2007. The first-round order of selection for the teams that did not win one of the top three picks was be determined by inverse order of their respective regular-season records.
