Washington, D.C. – Senior forward Brandon Bowman (Santa Monica,
Calif./Westchester) scored 16 points and sophomore center Roy Hibbert
(Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) added 14 points and eight rebounds,
leading No. 15 Georgetown to a 64-41 win over St. John’s in front of
9,739 fans at the MCI Center on Thursday night.
It was the seventh-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 17-4
overall and 8-2 in the BIG EAST. St. John’s falls to 10-11
overall and 3-7 in league play. The win gives Georgetown a season
series sweep of the Red Storm for the first time since the 1996-97
school year.
Georgetown led by 12 points at halftime (30-18) and outscored St.
John’s 18-2 over the first 7:41 of the second half, with Hibbert
scoring five and Bowman adding four, to take a commanding 48-20 lead
with 12:19 to play. The Red Storm got no closer than 26 points
and opened up its biggest lead, 32 points (60-38) on a Green free throw
with 7:42 to play.
The Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the game’s first six
points, with Bowman hitting a pair of shots and Hibbert adding a pair
of free throws. St. John’s was held without a basket for the
first four minutes, scoring their first basket on a layup by Aaron
Spears with 15:54 to play. Georgetown responded by scoring
eight-straight points over a 4:21 span, taking a 14-2 lead on a Bowman
dunk with 11:33 to play.
Georgetown extended the lead to 16 points, 24-8, on a Bowman jumper
with 6:57 left in the half and took its biggest lead of the half on a
pair of Cook free throws with 4:32 to play, giving the Hoyas a 28-10
lead. Georgetown led by 12 points, 30-18, at halftime.
Bowman connected on 7-of-9 shots from the field for 16 points, while Hibbert added 14 points and eight boards.
Georgetown hit 45.8 percent of its shots (22-of-48), including 33.3
percent from three-point land (6-of-18) and 73.7 percent from the line
(14-of-19). The Red Storm shot 32.7 percent from the floor
(16-of-49), 40.0 percent from three-point land (4-of-10) and 45.5 from
the line (5-of-11).
Georgetown held St. John’s to 41 points, the lowest output by the Red
Storm in the series since 1993-94 (a 60-49 GU win). The 41 points
scored by the Red Storm were the lowest by a BIG EAST opponent since
1983-84, when Providence lost 59-38 at home to the Hoyas. They
were the fewest points scored by a GU opponent since 2004-05, when the
Hoyas beat Boston University in the first round of the NIT, 64-34.
Georgetown wraps up a three-game homestand on Sunday, playing
ninth-ranked West Virignia. Tipoff at the MCI Center is slated
for 7 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN Plus (NewsChannel 8
locally) and can be heard live on SportsTalk 980 AM.
