Mountaineers Out Duel Knights

The West Virginia Mountaineers made a statement to the Big East, and the rest of the country on Saturday by completely dominating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 31-3.  Rutgers never got going on a wet day that saw Pat White and Steve Slaton overshadow the Knights duo of Teel and Rice.

Steve Slaton got the scoring started in the first quarter as he pulled off a run reminiscent of his spectacular run against Maryland a year ago.  Slaton took the hand-off to the left side, cut back across field and followed his blocks to the end zone.  After a fumbled punt return recovered by the Mountaineers, Pat White took it one yard for the score to put the Mountaineers up 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Rutgers added a it’s only points of the game on it’s next drive, getting a 39-yard Jeremy Ito field goal to cut the lead to 14-3.  However, the Mountaineer defense refused to allow the Scarlet Knights to sniff the end zone the rest of the afternoon.

Mountaineer kicker Pat McAfee added a field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Mountaineers a two touchdown lead going in to halftime.  The Mountaineer’s business like approach to the second half gave them another touchdown on a Steve Slaton 1-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.  Rutgers attempted to spark a comeback in the second half but were denied on several occasions by poor execution and turnovers.  Jeremy Ito missed a 41-yard field goal and Mike Teel was picked off twice deep in West Virginia territory.

The top ten ranked Mountaineer defense proved strong once again giving up it’s lowest point total of the season against an offense that averaged over 30 points per game coming in.  Pat White and Steve Slaton returned to form as they combined for over 200 yards on the ground.  White totaled 300 yards in the game passing for 144 yards and rushing for 156.  Slaton quietly ran for 73 yards and caught a screen pass taking it 51 yards giving him a total of 124 yards on the day.

West Virginia will take next Saturday off as they prepare to take on Big East rival Louisville in a Thursday night showdown in Morgantown on Nov. 8.
