Washington, D.C. – Georgetown University senior men’s basketball center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) was named to the Associated Press Preseason All-American team, it was announced on Monday.
Hibbert was joined on the team by North Carolina junior forward Tyler Hansbrough, Tennessee senior guard Chris Lofton, Michigan State senior guard Drew Neitzel and UCLA junior guard Darren Collison.
The team was selected by the 72-member panel that votes in the weekly top-25 poll.
It was another in a series of preseason honors for Hibbert, who was selected as the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Player of the Year. He was the first Georgetown player to be accorded BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year recognition since Alonzo Mourning shared the honor with Malik Sealy of St. John's in 1991-92.
Hibbert was also named a Preseason First Team All-American by Athlon Sports and Collegehoops.net and was a second team selection by The Sporting News.
Hibbert received 62 votes in the Associated Press voting and was second overall in voting. He was followed by Lofton (61), Neitzel (37) and Collison (31). The next-highest vote-getter was Brandon Rush of Kansas with 23.
Hibbert averaged 12.9 points and 6.9 rebounds last year and was a unanimous All-BIG EAST first team selection. He shot 67.1 percent from the field overall and set a BIG EAST record by hitting at a 71.2 percent clip in conference games. Hibbert, who blocked a team-high 90 shots last season, ranks sixth all-time in that category at Georgetown with 184 rejections.
Georgetown opens the 2007-08 season on Saturday, November 10, hosting the College of William & Mary. The Hoyas will tip off at Verizon Center at noon.
