Washington, D.C. – The fifth-ranked Georgetown University men’s basketball team tips off the 2007-08 season on Saturday, November 10 at home against the College of William & Mary.  The Hoyas are slated to tip off against the Tribe at noon at Verizon Center.  Local coverage of the game can be heard on SportsTalk 980 AM, with Rich Chvotkin calling all of the action.

The Hoyas are coming off one of the most exciting seasons in program history, when the Blue and Gray posted a 30-7 overall record and reached the 2007 NCAA Final Four after winning the BIG EAST Regular Season title and the BIG EAST Tournament Championship.

Georgetown was tabbed, along with Louisville, as the preseason favorites to win the BIG EAST Conference this season. The Hoyas, who return four starters from last year’s Final Four team, are ranked No. 5 nationally in the Associated Press Top-25 poll and in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ poll.

The Hoyas are led by senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep), who was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and was tabbed as a preseason All-American by the Associated Press.

He is the first Georgetown player to be accorded BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year recognition since Alonzo Mourning shared the honor with Malik Sealy of St. John’s in 1991-92.  Hibbert averaged 12.9 points and 6.9 rebounds last year and was a unanimous All-BIG EAST first team selection.  He shot 67.1 percent from the field overall and set a BIG EAST record by hitting at a 71.2 percent clip in conference games.  Hibbert, who blocked a team-high 90 shots last season, ranks sixth all-time in that category at Georgetown with 184 rejections.

Senior teammate Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) was tabbed as one of 10 members of the 2007-08 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.  Wallace, who has started all 102 games during his career, finished third on the team in scoring last season with 11.4 points per game, was third in assists (3.05 per game) and fifth on the team in rebounds (2.7 per game).  The senior connected on a team-high 73 three-pointers, shot 49.0 percent from outside the arc (73-of-149) and hit 50.7 percent of his field goals overall.

Junior guard Jessie Sapp (New York, N.Y./National Christian Academy) finished fifth on the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game, tied for third with 4.0 rebounds per game and led the team with 3.46 assists per game.  Sapp, who led the team in minutes per game (32.8), ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in assist/turnover ratio.

Sophomore forward DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) was an All-BIG EAST Rookie Team selection during the 2006-07 season.  Summers, who started 34 of 37 games last season, finished fourth on the team with 9.2 points per game and grabbed 3.7 rebounds.  He was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team after averaging 12.3 points as the Hoyas won their seventh tournament championship.

Saturday’s game will be the 10th meeting all-time between Georgetown and William & Mary.  The Hoyas lead the head-to-head series, 5-4, and have won the last three meetings between the teams.  Georgetown is 4-2 at home against the Tribe.
