Baylor's defense held Howard without a field goal for eight minutes in the first half in an 83-31 win on Friday night at the Ferrell Center.
The Bears (1-0) scored 22 straight points during the 8:56 stretch in the first half of the season opener for both teams at the Basketball Travelers Tip-Off Tournament.
Baylor led 47-8 at the half and outscored the Bison 9-4 early in the second to move to a 56-12 lead. Howard (0-1) could get no closer the remainder of the game.
“We were outmatched in a lot of ways,” Head Coach Cathy Parson said. “We did give the effort and stayed with it to the end.”
Danielle Wilson led the Bears with 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots, and Jessika Bradley added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Baylor turned the ball over 30 times compared to 28 by HU, but the Bears held a commanding 52-8 advantage in points in the paint and outscored the Bison 18-0 in fast break points.
Asha Santee led Howard with 10 points and freshmen Zykia Brown added eight points off the bench.
“I was impressed with our underclassmen tonight,” added Parson. “It did not always show up on the stat sheet, but it is the little things that make a difference.”
The Lady Bison will face the Cougars of Prairie View A&M on Saturday in the second game of the tournament.
