Mountaineers Survive Louisville, Gain Spot in Polls

The West Virginia University Mountaineers did everything they could to hand Louisville a victory.  Three second half turnovers and a less than aggressive offense let Louisville back in to the game last Thursday night only to have Pat White put the Mountaineers up for good.  The win, followed by an Ohio State loss, puts the Mountaineers at #6 in the latest BCS rankings.

Another game at Mountaineer Field between Louisville and West Virginia saw another tremendous comeback.  This time it was Louisville who came back from 17 points down in the second half to tie the game, however, West Virginia again came out on top.

West Virginia dominated the first quarter and led 14-0 thanks to two touchdown passes from Pat White to Darius Reynaud.  Louisville made the game interesting in the second quarter scoring a touchdown to cut the lead to 7.  The Mountaineers responded with a touchdown of their own but Louisville again answered by putting up another score right before half time.

The West Virginia offense was stymied by turnovers and penalties in the second half, but managed to open up a 17 point lead midway through the third quarter after a Pat McAfee field goal and a fumble return for a touchdown by safety Eric Wicks.  However, Louisville hung in and failed to fade away into the cold mountain night.  Two turnovers by Pat White led to Louisville scores and kicker Art Carmody added a field goal to tie the game with just over 3 minutes to play.  Pat White, after two fumbles and a near concussion, then took the field to lead the Mountaineers to victory.

On 2nd and 8 from the 50-yard line Pat White took a quarterback draw to the end zone for a touchdown, all but solidifying another Mountaineer victory.  Brian Brohm and the Cardinals were unable to score in the last 1:30 giving the Mountaineers a 38-31 victory.

The win for West Virginia lacked the style points needed to move up significantly in the BCS poll, however, with the win and an Ohio State loss the Mountaineers moved up one spot to #6.  The Mountaineers sit closely behind Missouri who at the moment sit in the #5 spot.  West Virginia will look to move up in the polls as at least two of the teams in front of them will have to lose a game with Missouri playing against Kansas a week from Saturday with the winner likely taking on Oklahoma in the Big XII title game.  All three teams sit above West Virginia in the latest BCS rankings.

West Virginia’s computer numbers have suffered in recent weeks but should improve with two upcoming games with ranked opponents Cincinnati and Connecticut.  The first of the two games takes place this Saturday in primetime against Cincinnati.  The Mountaineers then come home to face Connecticut before finishing out the season against rival Pittsburgh on December 1st.
