The Washington Wizards host the Indiana Pacers tonight at Verizon Center at 7:00 pm on Comcast SportsNet and WTEM 980 AM.
* Today’s game marks the second of four meetings between Washington and Indiana this season. On opening night in Indiana, Gilbert Arenas sent the game into overtime with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end regulation play, but the Pacers outscored the Wizards 16-7 in the extra session to earn a 119-100 win. After tonight’s games, the Wizards and Pacers will meet again on Dec. 22 in Indiana and April 14 in Washington.
* After sweeping three games from Indiana last season, Washington had its three-game winning streak against the Pacers snapped on Halloween night.
* Washington’s Caron Butler (21.0 ppg), Gilbert Arenas (20.3 ppg) and Antawn Jamison (20.2 ppg) join the Boston Celtics’ Paul Pierce (24.8 ppg), Kevin Garnett (21.8 ppg) and Ray Allen (21.7 ppg) as the only teammate trios in the NBA each averaging 20+ points per game. The last teammate trio in the NBA to each average 20+ points per game in the same season was Golden State’s Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway in 1990-91.
* Washington’s Arenas, Butler and Jamison and Boston’s Pierce, Garnett and Allen all rank in the NBA’s Top 15 in minutes per game this season. No other team in the NBA has more than one player in the Top 15.
* Antawn Jamison joins Kevin Garnett (BOS), Dwight Howard (ORL), Carlos Boozer (UTA), Yao Ming (HOU) and Zach Randolph (NY) as the only players in the NBA currently averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.
* Washington enters play tonight leading the NBA in rebounds per game (47.5) and offensive rebounds per game (15.8). Also, dispelling the theory that the Wizards lead the league in offensive rebounds per game solely because they have a lot of opportunities, the Wizards also lead the NBA in percentage of their own missed shots rebounded. This season Washington has corralled a league-best 31.7 percent of its offensive rebound chances.
* Last game vs. the Pacers...Gilbert Arenas had a season-high 34 points...Antawn Jamison (27 points, 16 rebounds), Caron Butler (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Brendan Haywood (10 points, 13 rebounds) recorded double-doubles...Washington scored a season-high 110 points, including 103 points in regulation (also a season-high)...Brendan Haywood grabbed a career-high 11 offensive rebounds; the most any NBA player has had in a game this season.
* In Washington’s last game (11/11 at Atlanta)…Caron Butler led Washington with a season-high 24 points...Brendan Haywood had a season-high 13 points...Haywood also notched his fourth double-double of the season...Antawn Jamison’s 24 points and 15 rebounds marked his fourth double-double of the season...DeShawn Stevenson had a season-high 11 points...All five Wizards starters scored in double figures for the first time this season...The Wizards established a new season-high with 26 assists and a new season-low with just 12 turnovers.
* Wizards-Pacers connections: Gilbert Arenas and Indiana’s Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy are former Golden State Warrior teammates...Arenas and Murphy were drafted by the Warriors in the same draft class (Murphy 14th overall; Arenas 31st overall in 2001)...Brendan Haywood and Jamaal Tinsley were was also drafted in 2001 (Haywood 20th by Cleveland; Tinsley 27th by Vancouver)...Antawn Jamison and Marquis Daniels were teammates in Dallas in 2003-04.
* WHAT THEY ARE SAYING…
WIZARDS HEAD COACH EDDIE JORDAN
On winning:
“You have to concentrate on what you have to do for the journey instead of the destination. We want to win, but you have to do things to win. Every possession throughout the game is important, and you have to play those possessions the right way to win the game.”
WIZARDS GUARD ANTONIO DANIELS
On tonight’s game:
“We understand what is at hand here. We’re trying to keep the train rolling. We had a good performance on Sunday, but we need to put that behind us, continue to build on it, and move forward.”
