March Madness begins in college basketball with the conference tournaments. The final weekend of the regular season leaves little left that needs to be decided heading into the Big East Tournament. The conference expanded to 16 teams this year with only 12 being invited to New York...
The top four teams in the Big East will receive a first round bye with 5-12 fighting it our to play another day. So what happens to the other 4 teams who don’t make the tourney?
For St. Johns(5-10) Providence(5-10) and USF(0-15) a welcome end to an agonizing season. How odd will it be to sit in Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tourney and not see the Red Storm take the court? They have been a fixture in Big East basketball and certainly the conference tournament year after year regardless of the record they produced.
Let’s now focus on the top of the Big East and arguably the top of college basketball in general. The Big East, no matter what happens in the conference tournament will place at least 5 teams in the big dance. Perhaps 2 of those teams will be number one seeds and if you listen to the sports talking heads, the Big East could get as many as 9. Of course the rest of the basketball universe would have to disappear (well, maybe just the MAAC) in order to have that happen. How proud Mike Tranghese must be of the conference this year. They lose Virginia Tech, Boston College and football powerhouse Miami to the ACC. All appeared to be lost especially in football and until recently only UConn seemed to be the only team people remembered about Big East Basketball. Tranghese must be immensely excited to see not only traditional powers Georgetown and Villanova return to glory, but add Pitt and West Virginia to the mix become one of the best conferences in basketball. In fact 7 Big East players were named to the top 30 considered for the Naismith award. The tourney begins March 8th at Madison Square Garden in New York and DCMetroSports will be there for all the action, bringing you updates daily on the progress of the Georgetown Hoyas and their march to the Final Four.
