Washington, D.C. –  Senior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and nine different players scored as No. 5 Georgetown used a decisive run at the start of the second half to pull away from Old Dominion for a 66-48 win in front of 8,424 at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk.  It was the fourth-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 4-0 overall, while the Monarchs fall to 3-4.

Hibbert recorded his first double-double of the season, and the 19th of his career, as Georgetown connected on a season-high 52.0 percent (26-of-50) of its field goals and handed out 20 assists.

Leading by seven points (30-23) at halftime, Georgetown used an 11-1 at the start of the second half and opened a 17-point lead, 41-24, on a fast break layup from senior forward Patrick Ewing, Jr. (Marietta, Ga./National Christian Academy [Md.]).  Ewing started the scoring in the second half with a drive, senior guard Jonathan Wallace (Harvest, Ala./Sparkman) hit a free throw and followed that with a three-pointer and Hibbert hit a layup and a free throw before Wallace fed Ewing on the layup to cap the drive.

A staunch defensive effort from the Hoyas limited Old Dominion to only one made field goal over a stretch of 6:11 between the end of the first half and the start of the second half as the Blue and Gray broke a 21-all tie and outscored the hosts 20-3 to take the 41-24 lead.

After taking the 17-point lead, ODU cut the lead to 12 points after a three-pointer from Darius James and a layup from Gerald Lee, who scored 16 points in the first half, but that was as close as the Monarchs would get.  Sophomore Vernon Macklin (Portsmouth, Va./Hargrave Military Academy), playing with nearly 50 family members and friends in attendance, fed freshman Chris Wright (Bowie, Md./St. John’s College High School) on a backdoor layup and freshman Austin Freeman (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) followed with a trey as the lead grew back to 17 points (46-29).  A layup from Frank Hassell made it 46-31, but sophomore Jeremiah Rivers (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) hit two free throws and fed Macklin for a thunderous dunk, pushing the lead to 19 points, 50-31.

     Georgetown
’s lead never got below 15 points and the Blue and Gray took its biggest lead, 60-40, on a pair of free throws from DaJuan Summers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) with 3:51 to play.

Behind a sold-out crowd, Old Dominion’s Ted Constant Convocation Center was pitched with excitement for the visit by the Hoyas, the highest-ranked team to visit the arena.  A basket by Sam Harris gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead, but Georgetown responded with a 9-0 run over a span of 2:05, taking a 9-2 lead when Sapp fed Hibbert for a dunk.

ODU responded and tied the game at 9-all after consecutive baskets from Lee, but the Hoyas went to their bread and butter, Hibbert, and broke the tie.  That started a 9-4 run over a span of 5:36, capped by a three-pointer from Wright as Georgetown extended its lead to 18-13.  An 8-3 run by Old Dominion, sparked by six points from Lee, who scored 16 in the first half, tied the game at 21-all, the second tie of the game.

GU outscored the Monarchs 9-2 over the final 2:40 of the first half, taking a 30-23 lead at the break.  Ewing fed Hibbert for a basket and then hit a three from the corner on an assist from Wright, Freeman slammed a dunk on an assist from Hibbert and Hibbert closed out the scoring with a dunk on a feed from Sapp.  Georgetown scored 13 first half baskets and had 11 assists.

Hibbert hit 6-of-9 shots from the field to finish with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals, while Freeman added 11 points.  Ewing finished with nine points, five rebounds and three assists, Wallace added eight points and three boards, Sapp chipped in seven points, a game-high six assists and two rebounds and Summers added two points, seven rebounds and two assists.  Macklin scored six points and grabbed two boards, Wright added seven points, two rebounds and two assists and Rivers chipped in two points, two assists and two steals.
